内容記述 | The present experiments were designed to examine the effectiveness of detainment and response prevention (flooding) on hastening the extinction of active avoidance responses and on reducing fear as assessed by a passive avoidance test. In Experiment I, rats were assigned to a nonshocked control group arid three experimental groups. After attaining the criterion of ten consecutive avoidance responses, the three experimental groups were given three different treatments - ten trials of ordinary extinction, detainment in the apparatus or in the cage. Following these treatments, the three groups received Pavlovian extinction. After extinction, the subjects were deprived of food for 25 hr and given an independent test for measurement of fear. The three groups showed a great resistance to extinction of avoidance responses with no differences among them, but the group receiving ordinary extinction showed less residual fear than the detainment groups, though more than the control group. In Experiment II, after attaining the acquisition criterion, the subjects were given one of four different treatments - ten response prevention trials, either blocked or non-blocked flooding for a total of 30 sec, or blocked flooding for 5-min. Following the treatment, the four groups received Pavlovian extinction and assessed for residual fear as in Experiment I. All groups showed rapid extinction of avoidance responses; and particularly, the flooding (5-min.) group extinguished more rapidly.. However, all groups showed reliably great residual fear with no differences among them. The results suggest the dissociation between the extinction of instrumental avoidance responses and the reduction of fear, and that the processes of extinction are different. | |||||
