内容記述 | This study was conducted to investigate the taking of many kinds of public English examinations by English department students. Subjects were 351 students, who were given a questionnaire consisting of 23 items. 242 students (68.9%) answered the questionnaire. The results were as follows : 1) The ratio of students who had taken these examinations was higher among second-year students than among first-year students (respectively, 92%; 83%), but most in each year have taken some English examination. 2) The proportions of students who had taken the examinations were 94.8% for the Step Test (Jitsuyo Eigo Ginou Kenteishiken : Eiken), 30.5% for Shogyo Eigo (Business English Test for high school students), and there were little students who took the other tests. Almost all students have passed the 3rd grade in the Step Test, and about half the students have passed the 2nd grade in Shogyo Eigo. 3) The ratio of candidates for the examination in future was higher among first-year students than among second-year students (respectively, 97%; 83%), however almost all students wished to take some English examination. 4) The proportions of candidates who hope to take the examinations were 99.5% for the Step Test, 13.5% for TOEFL, 8.8% for TOEIC, and there were a little students who would take the other tests. The candidates for TOEFL were about 7 times as many as students who had already taken it. Almost all students hoped to pass the 2nd grade in the Step Test, and most of the students hoped to take 500-600 scores in TOEFL and 590-860 scores in TOEIC. These results suggest that students have strong concern and motivation for these English examinations, especially for the Step Test. Judging from their relatively high concern and the target of high scores for TOEFL and TOEIC, the results also suggest that they have begun to be interest in those tests because of a recent internationally oriented trend; however they have poor knowledge about those tests. | |||||
