This grammatical construction often appears in archaeological writing in English. It is used to show conclusions based on evidence. This article also discusses aspects of archaeological writing and education in Japan. These include the memorization-based examination focus of middle and high school education. It is also the case that English and Japanese modal expressions do not correspond neatly between languages.
