This article explores how these houses and gardens function in Wharton's treatment of the International Theme during its twilight years. In fact, writing her final, uncompleted novel in the full light of the age of Modernity afforded Wharton a critical distance from the social phenomena that Henry James and other American novelists of manners had treated as contemporaneous.
