In the composition problems, children were asked to compose a number with another one. It was significantly easier for children to solve the problems with 2 and 3 as addends than ones with 4 as addend. Furthermore, children depended on direct strategy more often than overt one to the addended number 2 and 3. These results might suggest that three-year-olds children would represent numbers 1 to 3 as a firm structure.
