According to Warschauer et al., (2023), universities have a responsibility to teach students how to use AI tools for writing because such tools are likely to be necessary in the workplace of the future. However, teachers tend to emphasise the importance of cultivating basic literacy and knowledge, which are essential before students start using AI. The default route has been to insist on handwritten work and to ban all tools other than the electronic dictionary. In reality it is impossible to prevent students using translation software. Moreover, once students have mastered the basic skills and are able to write unaided, it seems reasonable to set assignments involving the use of software as a learning tool, as has already been done on some translation courses.
