The main comparison was between a semantic-based method – called the context method – and a mnemonic one – called the keyword method. Both of them have achieved significantly better results than rote learning in earlier studies. This study also tested a combination of the two methods as well as a version of the context method using simple English explanations of target words rather than Japanese translations of the words. This study aimed to redress some of the irregularities of earlier comparisons of the methods.
