Its location in the economically vibrant region of Southeast Asia combines with its proud record of historical achievements to hint at a positive promise and prospect of success. But its recent history of self-destructive politics and fratricidal conflict has left a traumatized society with gaping institutional deficits ? these deficits threaten to make the economic prospects ahead more daunting and less certain than can normally be expected. Which outcome will in the end prevail is primarily contingent on the optimum management of its economic and political resources domestically while, at the same time, effectively mining its trade and investment opportunities externally.
