Some of the more important strategies include scanning, skimming, speed-reading, and the ability to identify and eliminate irrelevant information. Academic reading, on the other hand, requires students to analyze texts, make inferences, and to think critically. Given these differences in strategy use, how reliable is the TOEIC reading score in predicting results on academic reading comprehension tests? This paper summarizes ongoing research into the predictive value of TOEIC reading scores. A class of students (n=21) was given 7 passages to read over the course of one semester. After reading each passage, all the students were given a short multiple-choice comprehension test. No time constraints were enforced.
