          <datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">This paper considers the adequacy of language materialsin Hi, friends!and its predecessor English Notesfor elementary school English educationwith particular focus onthe response to the expression “How are you?” as greeting. It is notuncommon that elementary and junior high school students respond to “How are you?” as greeting withbizarre patterns such as “I’m hungry,” “I’m sleepy,” or “I’m tired,” when we getinto theirEnglish classroom as class observers.In order to find the factor of such pragmatic failure this paper first discusseshow native speakers of English and advanced second language users of English respond to “How are you?” in naturalistic oral discourse. Then because of failing to findsuch strange greeting responses in naturalistic oral discourse, it argues that themain factorof thepragmatic bizarrenessroots in Hi, friends!and its predecessorwhich have been the mainteaching and learning resources for elementary school teachersand students. Thepaper concludes with pedagogical implications for teachers in practice suggesting the way of how they should use these language resources effectively inthe English classroom.</datacite:description>
